International Print Center New York announces the presentation of The Future Must Be Sweet: Lower East Side Printshop Celebrates 40 Years, a group show of prints, artists’ books and printed objects made by artists participating in the Printshop’s residency program during its first forty years. The Exhibition will be on view from September 18th - October 11th in IPCNY’s gallery at 526 West 26th Street in Chelsea, Room 824.

In collaborating with LESP on The Future Must Be Sweet, IPCNY honors the important contributions of a major non-profit New York City workshop that has provided facilities, instruction and technical and financial assistance to thousands of artists working in the medium of printmaking since its founding in 1968.

The Future Must Be Sweet has been curated by Marilyn S. Kushner, Curator and Head, Department of Prints, Photographs and Architectural Collections at the New-York Historical Society. For this major retrospective, Kushner traces LESP’s path in the context of recent history, representing the past forty years with work from the Printshop’s permanent collection created by artists who have held residencies there.

The complete artists’ list is as follows: Ghada Amer, Tomie Arai, Jackie Battenfield, Mike Bidlo, Willie Birch, Zana Briski, Bullet Space, Paul Chan, Theresa Chong, Amy Cutler, Edward Del Rosario, Angie Drakopoulos, Deborah Grant, Joanne Greenbaum, Jose Guinto, Matthew Day Jackson, Glenn Ligon, Ryan McGinness, Carrie Moyer, David Opdyke, Sheila Pepe, Juan Sánchez, Dread Scott, Amy Sillman and Jef Scharf, Clarissa Sligh, Allison Smith, Kiki Smith, Donald Tarantino, Mary Temple, William Villalongo, and Kara Walker.

Exhibition catalogues published by LESP with a curatorial essay by Marilyn S. Kushner will be offered free to the public and available at IPCNY’s gallery or through LESP. Organized Exhibition tours will also be available. To schedule a tour, please contact info@printshop.org, or 212-673-5390. Lower East Side Printshop is located at 306 West 37th Street, 6th Floor, in Manhatten.

Lower East Side Printshop, founded in 1968, is a non-profit art center that supports contemporary artists of all creative backgrounds by offering them studio space, career services, and expertise in printmaking to develop new work through experimentation and collaboration. In its classes, workshops, and exhibitions, a broad and diverse audience of enthusiasts, professionals, and institutions can learn about and collect prints.

The Future Must Be Sweet exhibition and catalogue are funded in large part by the Pollock-Krasner Foundation, the International Fine Print Dealers Association, and by public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.

IPCNY’s exhibitions this season are funded with the generous support of the Robert Lehman Foundation.

The Exhibition is the second in a series of presentations at IPCNY celebrating the contributions of a non-profit community workshop. The series was inaugurated in 2003 with Creative Space: Fifty Years of Robert Blackburn’s Printmaking Workshop, organized jointly by IPCNY, the Library of Congress and the Elizabeth Foundation for the Arts.

International Print Center New York is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit institution dedicated to the appreciation and understanding of the fine art print worldwide. Through innovative programming, IPCNY nurtures the growth of new audiences for the visual arts, while serving the print community through exhibitions, publications, educational programs, and information services both for its members and the public at large. Through its New Prints Program, IPCNY brings together a selection of quality prints from a wide range of sources in a series of quarterly exhibitions. Interspersed with these juried shows of contemporary work, IPCNY presents two curated or themed exhibitions each season. In addition to workshop-based shows, these exhibitions have included five international shows, six collection shows and, most recently, an exhibition exploring nature printing, both historic and contemporary.

IPCNY is supported with generous grants from the Lily Auchincloss Foundation, the Deborah Loeb Brice Foundation, Carnegie Corporation of New York, the Horace W. Goldsmith Foundation, the Hess Foundation, and the Porter Family Charitable Foundation. IPCNY’s New Prints Program is made possible with generous grants from the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts and the Greenwall Foundation, and with public funds from the New York State Council on the Arts and the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs.
