New
Prints 2001/Autumn is the fourth in a series of juried exhibitions
of current prints by both known and unknown artists at all stages
of their careers presented by IPCNY.
New
Prints presentations are juried by a committee of four to six
individuals representing various disciplines in the field. Those
serving on the Selections Committee for New Prints 2001/Autumn
were Nancy Princenthal, writer and critic; Robert Rainwater, Curator,
Prints Collection, New York Public Library; Peter Ralston, collector;
LuRaye Tate, Art Advisor. Criteria for selection are as follows:
only original fine art prints of the highest quality are eligible;
prints must have a release date within the past year; selections
must represent a variety of styles and techniques as well as a
diversity of sources, geographical and otherwise.
Forty-five
prints by both established and emerging artists are included in
New Prints 2001/Autumn. An unusually wide range of mediums and
techniques are represented, from woodcut, drypoint, etching, mezzotint,
lithography, screenprint, monoprint and photogravure, to silicone
intaglio and pigmented inkjet. Wennie Huang's screenprinted box
kites add a third dimension, as does Sabra Booth's Euclid's Jewels-Group
2001, a cluster of screenprinted fabric light sculptures.
Of
the 16 publishers represented in this exhibition, six are appearing
at IPCNY for the first time: Pyramid Atlantic of Riverdale, MD,
Trillium Press of San Francisco, CA., Galamander Press, Jim Kempner
Fine Art and Yama Press of New York City, and the new Silicon
Fine Arts of Brooklyn, New York. Self-published prints by independent
artists, making up nearly half of the show, are included, along
with new publications by Mel Bochner, Richard Bosman, Louise Bourgeois,
Santi Moix, Bernar Venet and Not Vital.
IPCNY received some 700 submissions for New Prints 2001/Autumn
from printmakers, publishers, artists, and presses around the
country and abroad. Submissions are encouraged from small and
experimental presses and publishers, regional and university presses,
and artists who would profit from the opportunity for broader
public access to their work. All prints are fully documented.
For New Prints 2001/Autumn, a jurist's statement by Nancy Princenthal
will be available, along with statements from artists represented
in the show.
Anyone
wishing to purchase work from a new prints show is referred directly
to the source-artist, publisher or gallery. IPCNY, a nonprofit
institution, requires no commission on sales.
With
New Prints 2001/Autumn, IPCNY continues its rotating presentation
of current prints, establishing an ongoing venue for the viewing
of artists' prints and a central source of information about artists
working in the medium of printmaking.
