International
Print Center New York announces the eighth exhibition of its New
Prints Program from Thursday, May 8th through Tuesday, June 10th
in its Chelsea gallery at 526 West 26th Street, 8th floor, Room
824. New Prints 2003/Spring is one of a series of juried shows
organized by IPCNY, showing current prints by both established
and emerging artists. Beginning this year, IPCNY is presenting
four New Prints exhibitions each season.
With
New Prints 2003/Spring, IPCNY continues its role as an ongoing
venue for the viewing of contemporary artists' prints and a central
source of information about artists working in the medium of printmaking.
Forty-one prints completed in the past year were selected out
of approximately 1,000 submissions, representing a wide range
of sources, many new to IPCNY. As always, the Selections Committee
chose prints of the highest quality, representing a wide variety
of styles and techniques as well as a broad diversity of sources,
geographical and otherwise. In addition to artists working independently,
works from the following presses are included: Center Street Studios,
Milton, MA; Gemini G.E.L. (at Joni Moisant Weyl, NYC); Goya Girl
Press, Baltimore, MD; Hamilton Press, Los Angeles; Shark's Ink,
Lyons, CO; and United Limited Artists Editions (ULAE) of Bay Shore,
Long Island; as well as ACS Editions, D2 Press and Harlan and
Weaver, three New York City presses.
A
number of the prints selected for New Prints 2003/Spring literally
jump off of the page, blurring the line between printmaking and
sculpture. Such notable works are Red Grooms's, Extra! Extra!
Read All About It!, an intricate three-dimensional paper diorama-like
color lithograph; Brant Schuller's Nested Towers and Rail, screenprints
on three dimensional materials (cardboard boxes and crafted wood);
and to-be-constructed prints by Jessica Frelinghuysen, Malcolm
Morley and Sara Varon.
The
Selections Committee for New Prints 2003/Spring was comprised
of: Ann Fensterstock, collector and educator; Joseph Goddu, Director,
Hirschl & Adler Galleries Inc.; Laura Steward Heon, Curator,
MASS MoCA; Faye Hirsch, writer and critic; Leonard Lehrer, Dean,
Fine and Performing Arts, Columbia College, Chicago; and Judith
Solodkin, Master Printer and Director, SOLO Impression, New York.
Sandra Lang, Director of the Visual Arts Administration M.A. Program
at N.Y.U, continues in her role as consultant to the New Prints
Program.
The
complete artist list is as follows: Cecily Brown, Enrique Chagoya,
Phillip Chen, Marc Cote, Will Cotton, Benjy Davies, Kip Deeds,
Kelly Driscoll, Jessica Frelinghuysen, Isca Greenfield-Sanders,
Red Grooms, Sarah Hauser, Orit Hofshi, Doris Laughton, Malcolm

All

supplied the print. IPCNY requires no commission on sales.
